No more Prius Prime and RAV4 Prime: new names for 2025

October 4, 2024 — Written by The Car Guide

While a sixth-generation Toyota RAV4 is on its way for the 2026 model year, it's almost the status quo for 2025. There are new body colors and new badges.

The RAV4 Hybrid will now carry a “HEV” emblem (for Hybrid Electric Vehicle), while the RAV4 Prime will be topped with “PHEV” (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) and officially called “RAV4 hybride branchable” in the language of Molière.

The powertrain of the latter combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and electric motors, which together generate 302 hp. Drawing solely on the battery, it is possible to cover 68 km officially, or even more in ideal conditions. A full charge at a 240 V terminal takes just 2.5 hours. These are just some of the reasons behind the popularity of the RAV4 Prime... er, plug-in hybrid, sorry.

A similar change concerns the Prius. We're no longer talking about the Prius Prime, but rather the Prius Plug-in Hybrid for 2025. It too will adopt a “PHEV” logo on its boot.

In its case, the system combines a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor for a total of 220 hp. The official electric range is 72 km for the base SE version and 64 km for the XSE version.

The 2025 models have not yet gone on sale; that will happen later this autumn. Prices will be announced at that time.
