Mercedes-Benz Vision Iconic: Like an electric Batmobile in a tuxedo
Mercedes-Benz is entering a new era of design. We've seen this with the redesigned CLA 2026 and the future GLC EQ 2027 (both electric), but also with recent concepts. The latest is called Vision Iconic and also reinterprets the brand's iconic grille, notably the vertical one found on legendary models such as the W 108, W 111, and 600 Pullman.
With its wide chrome frame, smoked glass structure and integrated contour lighting, it becomes a “digital facade” and even illuminates the star on the hood. Animation scenarios for the grille emphasize the importance of light in evoking emotion, according to Mercedes-Benz design director Gorden Wagener.
Art Deco with a modern twist
The inspiration for the Vision Iconic concept comes from the golden age of automotive design in the 1930s, with a long hood, flowing lines, and an Art Deco touch combined with a continuous bench seat inside and a rear end reminiscent of classics such as the 300 SL.
The ultra-glossy black paint amplifies the car's monolithic effect, which is also covered with innovative solar cells to recharge the battery and provide additional range. The company claims that an 11-square-meter photovoltaic surface (equivalent to the body of a mid-size SUV) could produce enough energy for up to 12,000 km per year under ideal conditions.
Hyper-analog and lounge atmosphere
The interior of the Vision Iconic concept was designed with a future in mind where automated driving prevails without driver intervention, so the comfort and layout are worthy of a lounge-style living room. The centerpiece of the dashboard is a floating glass structure called the “Zeppelin.”
As soon as the door is opened, the instrument cluster comes to life with a cinematic animation, entirely analog, inspired by high-end chronographs. In the center, one of the four clocks is shaped like the brand's logo. Note also the four-spoke steering wheel: the Mercedes-Benz logo floats inside a glass sphere, held in place by the spokes like a jewel.
Behind the Zeppelin, a decorative surface unfolds in a glossy mother-of-pearl inlay. Complex mother-of-pearl marquetry also adorns the door panels, encircling the silver-gold handles before blending into a star pattern that frames the rear bench seat. The driver and passenger can share the spacious front bench seat upholstered in blue velvet. The floor of the vehicle is covered with elaborate marquetry, a technique dating back to the 17th century that was revived in the 1920s.
No technical details
Otherwise, very little is known about the Vision Iconic's handling and performance. No figures have been given on engine power or battery capacity, for example. This is primarily a study in style and technology.
Mercedes-Benz nevertheless highlights the inclusion of an active rear-wheel steering system that increases maneuverability and makes parking easier—a practical feature with such a long wheelbase. The steering itself is electronic (steer-by-wire), minimizing the effort required by the driver.
