Mercedes-Benz tests its future electric GLC

The Mercedes-Benz GLC remains the most popular vehicle of the German luxury brand, and its range of models, which includes mild hybrid options, plug-in hybrid systems, and even high-performance hybrids, will expand in the next year with the addition of a 100% electric GLC.

Replacing the EQC we never got in Canada, and going much further than the disappointing EQB, this next-generation model built on the MB.EA platform promises to set benchmarks in performance, range, fuel efficiency and recharging speed - in the manner of the future CLA for electric cars - while offering the versatility and utility of its gasoline-powered siblings.

No figures have yet been released, but Mercedes-Benz is giving us a glimpse this week as camouflaged prototypes are being tested in northern Sweden, in freezing temperatures and on both snow-covered and icy roads. The program includes over 600 individual tests.

“Our new electric GLC is an uncompromising car, and we test it just as thoroughly. During our winter tests in Sweden, it demonstrated its reliability and robustness, even under extreme conditions,” says Christoph Starzynski, Vice President, Vehicle Development and Integration.

Officially named “GLC with EQ technology”, the vehicle has two electric motors forming the 4MATIC all-wheel drive system, the front one of which can be disconnected when less grip is required to reduce electron consumption and maximize range. For the record, both motors are independently controlled by ultra-sophisticated electronic modules, optimizing torque distribution to the wheels.

Mercedes-Benz is also talking about an innovative braking system that combines normally separate components into a single unit, the result apparently being improved pedal feel and more precise, consistent braking maneuvers. You'll have to try it out to see exactly what the difference is.

The electric GLC will also employ an 800 V architecture for ultra-fast recharging - in excess of 320 kW on a sustained basis. By the way, different batteries will be offered for different markets. Each will be equipped as standard with a heat pump to limit range loss in cold weather. Expect around 500 km in ideal conditions.

Note that there are no images of the vehicle's interior. An unveiling is scheduled for September. Canadian sales are scheduled to begin next year as the 2026 model.
