Kia Forte 2014-2018: what to know before you buy?

Small cars are disappearing in favor of SUVs? Too bad for those who want a more affordable, fuel-efficient vehicle. That said, there's always the second-hand market.

The Kia Forte is a compact sedan - also available as a hatchback, the Forte5, not to mention the now-defunct two-door Forte Koup - that you should consider if your budget is limited. It will cost you less than a Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic with comparable equipment and mileage.

Here, we're going to focus on the previous generation, the one marketed from 2014 to 2018. To help you with your shopping, here are a few good things to know about it.

Depending on the model, you'll find one of three four-cylinder engines under the hood: 1.8 or 2-liter naturally-aspirated with 145 or 147 hp (before or after 2017), 2-liter naturally-aspirated with 173 hp (164 hp in 2018) or 1.6-liter turbocharged with 201 hp. The regular four-door Forte had to make do with the first two, while its two- and five-door siblings were offered with the two more powerful engines for added sportiness. Transmissions, automatic or manual, are generally six-speed.

A seven-speed automatic came to accompany the turbo engine in 2017, but you can't really call it an upgrade. That same year, Kia took the opportunity to make a few other updates, including touch-ups to the front end and the addition of several safety features, including the autonomous braking system that detects imminent danger and automatically stops the car.

In terms of storage, the sedan boasts 422 liters of trunk space, which is pretty good for a compact car. The coupé can carry 377 liters, while the versatile Forte5 increases the volume behind the bench to 657 liters. Ideal for a small family.

Caution!

The Automobile Protection Association (APA) warns that the 1.8- and 2-liter four-cylinder engines fitted to Forte models produced between 2010 and 2015 have been plagued by numerous problems, including excessive oil consumption, knocking and clattering.

A class action suit against Kia was filed after some 50 owners complained to the APA. According to the organization, there were scuffing problems between the cylinders and pistons due to a manufacturing defect. It would be wiser to avoid these engines, despite their lower fuel consumption.

Recalls have also been issued for them in connection with a fire hazard. Speaking of recalls, some Forte 2014 to 2017 models have brake lines that can corrode and leak, resulting in reduced braking force. Check that the applicable corrective measures have been taken.

As always when buying a pre-owned vehicle, make sure you know the history of the model you're interested in, as well as the maintenance it has undergone. We also recommend that you have it inspected by a mechanic you trust before finalizing your purchase.
