I'm looking for a mid-size van with a reliable engine. Which one should I choose?
I'm looking to change vehicles in the fall of 2025 and I'd like to go for a mid-size pickup. I repeated the Nissan Frontier 2025, in the SV version. My number one criterion is engine reliability with reasonable power.
I'm not looking for absolute comfort or a panoply of the latest gadgets. I keep my vehicles well maintained and for a very long time, between 12 and 15 years. So I'm looking for a vehicle with reliable mechanics and no known problems.
Do you think I'm making the right choice based on my purchasing criteria?

Sometimes a little overlooked in a hotly contested category, the Nissan Frontier is indeed a worthy vehicle. In fact, we were able to compare a 2024 model with four competitors (Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger, Chevrolet Colorado and Jeep Gladiator).
Although it's still a fuel-guzzler (12.3 L/100 km on average), we found the engine to be a pleasant performer. With 310 hp and 281 lb-ft, the V6 has no trouble moving the vehicle efficiently. The other good news is that this powertrain has proved reliable so far. Introduced here in 2022, this block was already fitted in the previous version of the Frontier sold in the USA since 2020. It has therefore been on the market for several years, without any major problems. The same goes for the chassis, which has been stiffened for the new generation but remains based on that of the Frontier released in 2005!
In terms of on-board technology, the Frontier sold up to 2024 lagged, which was an advantage for you in a way. But the 2025 model sees its dashboard evolve notably, with the arrival of a new 12.3-inch screen enabling wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The fact that you opt for the SV version means that you won't benefit from certain additional equipment, such as 360-degree vision around the truck or the induction charging system. Finally, you should be aware that some comfort features are not available on the SV model you're interested in, but since this criterion isn't important to you, it shouldn't be a problem.
We haven't had a chance to drive a 2025 model yet, but there's no doubt that the driving dynamics will remain identical to the 2024 model. Indeed, the chassis and engine remain similar; the main changes concern the interior, and exterior appearance and a 500 lb. increased towing capacity.
The only issue we believe is possible with this vehicle is some quirks in the multimedia system. Nissan has already experienced problems in this area, and a recall has been issued for the Frontier in this respect for 2022 models. So, if you're able to live with a few computer bugs, the Frontier should suit you just fine otherwise.
In conclusion, I think that an entry-level Nissan Frontier SV, less expensive and less equipped to limit costs and the risk of breakage, remains a wise choice for a long-term purchase.
