U.S. President Donald Trump is putting his money where his mouth is by imposing a 25% customs tariff on imports of foreign-manufactured cars and light trucks, effective April 3, a move he says will revive the U.S. auto industry and enable $100 billion of investment in the industry in the U.S.

This is a major blow for non-US automakers, already hit by 25% customs duties on aluminum and steel, effective since mid-March.

In the case of vehicles assembled in Canada and Mexico and sold on U.S. soil, and which comply with the terms of the CUMA, the 25% will apply only to content not produced in the U.S..
