GM makes major announcements including new models to come
As it prepares to reduce operations at its Ontario assembly plant from three to two shifts this fall, General Motors announced on Wednesday that it will invest around US$4 billion (nearly C$5.5 billion) over two years to increase production of electric and gasoline-powered vehicles in the U.S., in response to tariffs.
By adding the recent investment in new V8 engines, GM will have the capacity to manufacture a total of over 2 million vehicles a year across the country.
Three American plants are involved. Firstly, the Orion plant in Michigan will start producing full-size gasoline-powered SUVs and pickup trucks in early 2027 to meet continuing strong demand. At the same time, the Factory ZERO complex in Detroit-Hamtramck will focus on the Chevrolet Silverado EV, Cadillac ESCALADE IQ, GMC Sierra EV and Hummer EV.
The Fairfax, Kansas plant will then support production of the gasoline-powered Chevrolet Equinox from mid-2027. GM points out that sales jumped by more than 30% in the first quarter of 2025 compared with last year.
At the same location, the next-generation Chevrolet Bolt EV 2027 will go into production by the end of this year, for delivery in 2026. And that's not all: GM will be injecting even more money in the future to assemble another affordable next-generation electric vehicle here. Its identity remains a mystery.
Finally, the Spring Hill, Tennessee plant won't be limited to electric vehicles like the Cadillac Lyriq and Vistiq. Contrary to reports that the gasoline-powered Chevrolet Blazer would be discontinued after 2025, we've learned that a successor is on the way, and that it will be built in Spring Hill instead of Mexico.
