Ford Expedition 2025: major redesign and new Tremor version on the menu

October 11, 2024 — Written by The Car Guide

Following the example of its luxurious cousin, the Lincoln Navigator, the Ford Expedition is getting a major makeover for the 2025 model year. The automaker says it spent more than 1,000 hours talking to customers and their families to better understand their current needs and improve its full-size SUV accordingly.

Still available in regular or MAX extended-wheelbase formats, this fifth-generation Expedition doesn't change radically in terms of exterior design, but its reworked front end and new wheels are eye-catching.

At the rear, the tailgate is divided into two sections: the smaller one, which folds down, can be used as a bench or work surface (maximum capacity 500 lb). It can even be fitted with an optional backrest. By the way, opening the tailgate has never been so easy, as all we have to do is stand nearby for a few seconds, key in the pocket, and reveal the trunk access. What's more, four optional lights around the vehicle provide practical back-up lighting for camping or other evening activities.

Robustness and power

Inspired by the F-150 pickup of the same name, the Tremor version that replaces the Timberline stands out from the others (Active, King Ranch and Platinum) with its rugged looks and features that enhance the Expedition's off-road capabilities. Its 10.6-inch ground clearance is unrivalled in its class, aided by 33-inch General Grabber off-road tires and a redesigned suspension. There are also large Raptor-style side steps, as well as a skid plate and towing eyes at the front.

The Expedition Tremor comes standard with a high-output 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 that develops 440 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque, not to mention Rock Crawl mode and single-pedal trail driving. This engine is also available as an option in the Platinum version. Otherwise, the V6 generates 400 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. Note that there is no longer an Expedition XLT or Limited with less power.

Before going any further, we should add that the maximum towing capacity has been increased from 9,200 to 9,600 lb with the appropriate equipment.

Versatility and technology

Inside the Ford Expedition 2025, a new multi-purpose motorized console moves forward or backward by up to 20 cm to maximize space, storage and usability for occupants in the first two rows. Who won't like that? Another popular feature is the possibility of obtaining a third-row bench seat with only the central backrest folding away, allowing long objects such as skis, fishing rods or wooden planks to be slipped into the vehicle even with six people on board.

One of the highlights of the new generation is, of course, the Ford Digital Experience, which here takes the form of a central touchscreen and a second 24-inch panoramic display, deeply recessed into the dashboard at the base of the windscreen. The entire display is customizable to avoid redundancy, and the slightly flattened shape of the steering wheel makes it easier to see what's in front of you.

The Google Assistant responds to voice commands, but Alexa is also part of the set for those who prefer this system. Navigation is via Google Maps, and other applications can be downloaded via Google Play. Please note, however, that a subscription will be required after one year to continue enjoying the benefits.

Then there's BlueCruise version 1.4 hands-free driving technology, the most advanced to date, as detailed in one of our recent articles. Here again, however, customers will have to subscribe sooner or later to use it.

Orders for the Ford Expedition 2025 will open on October 24, but dealer deliveries won't follow until spring 2025. Prices will be announced in the meantime.
