BMW wants to eliminate SUVs

July 19, 2024 — Written by The Car Guide

While BMW has just unveiled a new generation of its popular X3 compact SUV, what's next for its coupe variant, the X4? Well, the end is nigh, it seems. Quoting German automaker officials, the Italian Motor1 site reports that this model will not be renewed. For its part, BMW Canada says it is unable to confirm this information.

The reasoning is simple. First, sales are marginal. Secondly, the little X2 expanded when it was redesigned for 2024, and its price has also moved closer to that of the X4. It even delivers up to 312 hp in the M35i xDrive version.

Otherwise, for those who want something bigger and more powerful but find the design of the new X3 not sporty enough, there's always the X6.

The story doesn't say exactly when BMW plans to stop producing the X4, but it won't be long. Deliveries of the X3 2025 are due to start this fall.

In a similar vein, the exuberant, beefy BMW XM - the only SUV exclusive to the M performance division - already appears to have an end in sight. According to its sources, Automotive News reports that this hybrid-powered vehicle will end production in November 2028, with no replacement planned.

A U.S. BMW spokesman replied that the company had not yet made an official decision on the future of the XM.

At the same time, BMW is working on a new generation of electric vehicles based on its Neue Klasse platform. At least six different models are expected within the next four years, and it's not impossible that a coupe-style SUV will be among them.
