Need new summer or all-season tires for your vehicle? Whether you want to do it a long time in advance or you're in a hurry (winter tires are still mandatory in Quebec until March 15, anyway), it's not so easy to make the right choice, given the large number of models available on the market. Although prices have risen considerably in recent years, it's worth pointing out from the outset that buying “cheap” tires is rarely an advantageous solution. Short-term savings are often offset by earlier replacement, not to mention reduced performance. It's always better to choose quality. Stretching your winter tires is not a good idea
Also, let's remind those who might be tempted to keep their winter tires for longer (for example, until late spring or even the rest of the year) that nothing prevents them from doing so. In fact, the law only prohibits driving with tires that are too worn, meaning those with a tread depth of less than 1.6 mm (2/32 inch).
As CAA-Quebec points out, winter tires are made of a rubber compound specially designed to retain its elasticity in colder weather, but it disintegrates much more rapidly under the effect of heat. The result is not only accelerated wear, but also the risk of the tire bursting. What's more, compared with summer and all-season tires, winter tires have greater rolling resistance, which translates into noisier driving and higher fuel (or electron) consumption.
Moreover, in tests carried out at a temperature of 20°C, the organization found a difference of around 25% in braking distances. To give you an idea, a vehicle travelling at 100 km/h on wet pavement will brake a distance of 93.8 m when fitted with winter tires, compared with just 74.3 m with all-season tires!
