Apple launches CarPlay Ultra and it's Aston Martin that gets the ball rolling
The giant Apple has just unveiled CarPlay Ultra, the next generation of CarPlay, which integrates more deeply into the vehicle “to offer the best of the iPhone and the best of the car”.
Supporting iPhone 12 and newer with iOS 18.5 or higher, the system takes over all the driver's screens, including the dashboard, and aims to offer an even more customizable experience.
More control than ever
For example, CarPlay Ultra lets you vary the display of dials (speedometer, rev counter, etc.) in new ways. Drivers can choose to have information from their iPhone, such as maps and media, as well as information from the car, such as advanced driver assistance systems and tire pressure, directly on the dashboard.
It's also possible to use on-screen controls, physical buttons or the Siri assistant to manage basic vehicle functions, including radio and climate control, as well as advanced or specific functions and controls, such as audio system configurations or performance settings. CarPlay Ultra also introduces iPhone-powered widgets that adapt to the car's screen or dashboard to provide information at a glance.
A design unique to each car brand
CarPlay Ultra will look different depending on the vehicle brand. Custom themes are developed in close collaboration between Apple and each manufacturer's design team to create bespoke experiences. Drivers will also be able to change theme colors and wallpapers to suit their tastes, which is frankly interesting.
“iPhone users love CarPlay, which has transformed the way people connect to their vehicles. With CarPlay Ultra, in collaboration with automakers, we're reimagining the in-car experience, making it even more unified and consistent,” says Apple Vice President of Worldwide Product Marketing Bob Borchers. This new generation of CarPlay offers drivers a smarter, safer way to use their iPhone in the car, while seamlessly integrating with the vehicle's systems and enhancing each automaker's signature look and feel.”
Deployment of CarPlay Ultra begins today in newly ordered Aston Martin vehicles in the US and Canada. Existing models equipped with the British luxury brand's next-generation infotainment system will be able to obtain it via a software update in the coming weeks.
Several other car brands will follow suit. Hyundai, Kia and Genesis have already been confirmed, without specifying when they will be available.
