A very affordable electric Jeep is coming here “very soon”
As Jeep prepares to officially unveil the Wagoneer S tonight, its first 100% electric SUV for the North American market, many are sighing at the hefty price tag this vehicle will command. But the good news is that another very affordable model is coming in the near future.
In an interview on U.S. TV channel CNBC, Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares said this week that Jeep will launch a $25,000 (U.S.) electric vehicle in the U.S. “very soon”.
It won't be the Recon, which will follow the Wagoneer S later this year, nor the Avenger, which seems destined to remain in Europe as it's too small for its asking price (38,000 euros).
Tavares was referring to the all-new Citroën e-C3. “We use the same expertise since we're a global company and work is totally fluid within Stellantis' engineering departments,” he said, referring to a sharing of components that considerably reduces costs.
However, a derivative of the e-C3 is unlikely to appeal to the North American public, as it is limited to 111 hp (0-100 km/h in 11 seconds!) and 320 km range (according to the WLTP standard).
A more likely scenario involves the next-generation Jeep Compass, which will be built on the STLA Medium platform and produced in Brampton, Ontario, where Stellantis' investments total CAD 1.32 billion. The plant will receive a brand-new flexible assembly line capable of producing both combustion and electric vehicles.
As we wrote last November, according to the Unifor union, work is scheduled for completion in autumn 2025, so the first examples should hit the market in the first half of 2026.
The affordable electric Jeep will rival the new Chevrolet Equinox EV, among others. Jeep will also be adding a Gladiator 4xe to its range of plug-in hybrids in 2025, as recently announced.
