A six-seat Tesla Model Y coming soon to us?

Since Tesla is discontinuing production of the Model X, customers looking for a vehicle that can carry more than five people will have to turn to the competition. Unless…

As you may know, there is a long-wheelbase Model Y with six seats (called the Model Y L) available in China, India, and Australia, among other places. According to a report by the business magazine Forbes, Tesla is reportedly preparing to launch it in the United States. If that happens, Canada could follow suit.

This model is about 17 cm longer and 5 cm taller than the familiar five-seat version. It features a three-row configuration with two seats in each row, for a total of six seats.

The rest of the features and amenities are similar. As for the powertrain, expect two engines and all-wheel drive to be included as standard, not just one engine and rear-wheel drive.

One important point to note is that models for the U.S. market will likely be assembled at the Texas plant. Sales in the United States could begin by the end of 2026.

In Canada, however, the counter-tariffs imposed on vehicles manufactured by our neighbors would likely force Tesla to import them from China, taking advantage of the elimination of the 100% surcharge on up to 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles per year.

As a reminder, the Model Y is currently available in Canada in three trim levels: the rear-wheel-drive Premium at $49,990 (MSRP), the all-wheel-drive Premium at $64,990, and the Performance at $74,990. Their ranges are 463, 542, and 494 km, respectively.
