2016-2019 Volkswagen Golf R: What You Should Know Before You Buy
After a two-year hiatus, the feisty Volkswagen Golf R is back on the Canadian market for 2022 for the eighth generation of the Golf. It marks a big step forward in terms of technology, cabin design, and performance of course, with an upgrade to 315 horsepower as well as the addition of new modes called Special (designed specifically for racing) and Drift (to swing the rear end in complete freedom).

A Mighty Engine
First, its 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine produces 288 horsepower at 5,400 rpm and 280 lb-ft of torque at just 1,800 rpm. Controlled by a six-speed manual transmission or the famous DSG dual-clutch gearbox with six speeds (before 2018) or seven speeds, its power is distributed to all four wheels via the 4MOTION system.
All of this allows the old Golf R to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in about five seconds (4.7 for the latest generation). It requires premium gasoline, of course, and its average consumption sits between 9 and 10 L/100 km, which drops by a few tenths in automatic models. This is lower than its main rivals.
All-Wheel Drive
On the track, the Golf R is less manoeuvrable than a Golf GTI because of its all-wheel drive system, which is quite heavy. In addition, although the 4MOTION system can send up to 90% of the torque to the rear wheels, it is not as precise as a Subaru WRX STI or a Honda Civic Type R when pushed around.
Some drivers also criticize it for the excessive noise generated by the rear axle at high speed. Others find the clutch too spongy. Most will tell you that the very thin sidewalled 19-inch tires make for an uncomfortable experience when driving over expansion joints on the road, for example.
But you know what? In 2016, The Golf R won The Car Guide's sport compact comparison test, which pitted it against the WRX STI and the Ford Focus RS. Its perfect balance of refinement and performance earned it the first place.
Some Modifications
For 2018, the Golf R received a slight update focusing primarily on its appearance and interior: new LED headlights and taillights, redesigned bumpers, new rims, several additional colours and a modernized dashboard featuring a new digital screen similar to what Audi offers. The quality of the interior finish is also reminiscent of the brand with the four rings.
Now, what about the price? Expect to pay just over $40,000 for a 2019 Golf R in good condition and with reasonable mileage. That’s what the market is currently like! If you look at 2016 or 2017 models instead, you’ll see prices between $25,000 and $30,000. And remember: a thorough mechanical inspection is always necessary, especially if the car has been used driven on the race track!
