TRACTION INTEGRALE
TRACTION INTEGRALE (French for "all-wheel drive") is a four-wheel drive system developed by Renault for its road cars. The system was first introduced in 1980 on the Renault 18 4x4 and has since been used on various Renault models.
History
The Traction Integrale system was developed in the late 1970s as Renault sought to expand its lineup with vehicles suitable for varied terrain and weather conditions. The first production model to feature the system was the Renault 18 4x4, launched in 1980.
Technical Features
The Traction Integrale system uses a viscous coupling to distribute power between the front and rear axles. Under normal driving conditions, most of the power is sent to the front wheels. When slip is detected at the front axle, the viscous coupling progressively transfers power to the rear axle, providing improved traction.
The system operates automatically without any input from the driver, making it user-friendly and suitable for on-road use. The viscous coupling allows for a smooth and progressive power transfer, unlike some mechanical systems that can be abrupt.
Applications
Traction Integrale has been used on several Renault models over the years, including:
- Renault 18 4x4 (1980-1986)
- Renault 21 4x4 (1990-1994)
- Renault Espace 4x4 (1991-2002)
- Renault Safrane 4x4 (1992-2000)
- Renault Laguna 4x4 (2001-2007)
The system has proven particularly popular on Renault's larger family cars and MPVs, where the additional traction is valued by customers in regions with challenging weather conditions.
